On October 3rd our class went to Grass Roots Learning Centre along with our Kindergarten buddy class. Students had the opportunity to see a garden during the fall harvest. They harvested tomatoes, berries, onions and planted mushrooms! They also went through a nature trail that was lined with indigenous plants of the North Island. We learned about Salal, Elderberry, Huckleberry, Salmon Berry, Skunk Cabbage, False Lily of the Valley, and Blackberries. Grass Roots also has a Shitaki Mushroom garden. Students sang songs and ate baked goods filled with harvested huckleberries with the garden’s volunteers. It was a magical experience and we are so grateful to have a community garden within walking distance. We will definitely be connecting with them again to see a garden in Winter and Spring as well.
On our walk home we stopped by my house and met my three chickens. Students enjoyed all the wing flapping and even found an egg in the coop!
